Chris: Hi there, please introduce yourself.
Attila: Hello, my name is Attila Jancsina. I am originally from Hungary, and I have lived in several places around the world over the last two decades. The most important of these was Los Angeles in the early 2000s, and later, Costa Rica. Currently, I reside in Madrid, Spain with my family.
I began my career as a computer graphic artist and game programmer. I started in high school on the Commodore c64 and then continued on the Amiga. I sold my first computer game in 1989 and went on to work for top companies like Sega. Later, I was drawn into the Internet boom, and I have been involved in web design, web programming, and e-commerce ever since. I also worked on several iPhone game projects, although my main focus remained on the Internet. Presently, I am the founder of thumbmachine.com, which is my primary project.
Chris: Can you tell us more about your background and how did you come up with the idea for Thumbmachine?
Attila: Regarding how Thumbmachine began, it all started when I was working on a simple PHP script for one of my side projects. The script’s purpose was to bulk generate image files with text from database entries. I soon realized that image manipulation with PHP produced surprisingly good results. This was an underdeveloped area with limited documentation and scarce relevant libraries. It got me thinking about server-side image generation.
I pondered questions like, “What could we use it for?” and “What web service could we build around it?” I realized that an image with text on it was just one step away from an ad creative or a video thumbnail. The idea of video thumbnails seemed particularly promising because there were 2 million YouTubers out there, indicating a substantial market, and video thumbnails had fixed sizes and ratios, which sets some basics.
I shared my idea with my best friend and partner in crime, Robert Orban, our senior programmer, and that’s when we decided to start working on it.
Chris: How does Thumbmachine use AI to generate thumbnails?
Attila: Next, we delved into the idea and experimented with various approaches. Currently, what we have is, it involves treating a text block and a hero image as separate entities on different layers, aiming to provide an aesthetically pleasing placement of the two. While the placements can vary—for instance, keeping the same margin from the side edges for text and the hero image—the text block itself undergoes changes, including font variations and adjustments to the relative positions of each line in relation to the others. These movements or variations can’t be purely random, as there are significantly more ‘bad’ combinations than visually appealing ones. So there is an AI for that, as the saying goes these days.
The actual creation process begins with the user either uploading existing assets or creating one using our custom text-to-image model. We employ custom-trained SDXL models, with a primary focus on human faces, resulting in better images like “surprised marketer in a suit” rather than flying unicorns. Additionally, we offer an AI background remover and an upscale AI that includes face recognition and optimization features. If the uploaded assets are too small or unclear, all of this can be easily corrected. These AI models run on separate physical servers.
After uploading the hero image and/or background, Thumbmachine presents the user with color choices, extracted from the assets as the most prominent colors, complementary colors, and matching color palettes from a vast library. Selecting the colors leads to the next step, where stylized backgrounds are offered. Then the user enters the text for the thumbnail, and that’s it.
Main styles are generated, the user selects the best and then zooms in on the final design by locking in fonts, colors and placements.
Chris: What are some of the benefits of using Thumbmachine over other thumbnail generators?
Attila: Our primary goal is to assist people who lack graphic design skills by contributing the “artistic” element to the equation. You provide an image and text, and we apply the “art.” I understand this may sound like a bold claim, but we have already achieved surprisingly good results. It’s essential to note that this isn’t a tool for generating thumbnails based solely on text prompts. Instead, it’s an assisted process where the user has the final say in determining the best color and placement combination. While the current AIs can offer variations created based on identified similarities and rule sets, the decision of whether a particular green with red is a good match or not is a task for humans. Thumbmachine provides you with the options to make that choice.
Anyone can generate a professional thumbnail in 3-5 minutes with Thumbmachine, this is not a marketing gimmick.
Chris: What are some of the challenges you have faced as the founder of Thumbmachine?
Attila: No programming task on Earth is tougher than getting the first 100 visitors to a newly launched site…
Chris: What are some of the future plans for Thumbmachine?
Attila: We will soon be offering Facebook ads, custom-sized ad creatives, social media covers, and more. What’s next? Animations.
Chris: What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs who are developing AI-powered products?
Attila: IT entrepreneurs are under enormous pressure these days to come up with something new quickly, repeatedly, and continually. This is because if you lean back for just one day, there are like ten new players in your niche. This pressure often leads to the mentality of putting out something new, even if it’s only half-baked. It’s as if it’s better to offer something, even if it doesn’t work. However, this is a huge mistake. Anytime you promise something that you won’t deliver, you’ll end up with frustrated users who will know about it. You will lose them, and every potential user lost to you becomes a potential user for your competition.
