
In collaboration with Microsoft, Mercedes-Benz is bringing ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence software, to its vehicles. This integration aims to provide drivers with a more fluid and natural voice-command experience, elevating the capabilities of the pre-existing “Hey, Mercedes” voice command feature1. The software accepts natural voice commands and can also conduct conversations, allowing users to ask the Voice Assistant for details about their destination, suggest a new dinner recipe, or answer a complex question while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road23. The voice command data collected is stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, where it is anonymized and analyzed to improve the intuitive voice assistant further and define the rollout strategy for large language models in more markets and languages2.
Corporate vice president of Microsoft’s AI platform Eric Boyd commented that, unlike standard voice assistants that often require specific commands, ChatGPT excels at handling follow-up questions and maintaining contextual understanding. On the one hand, upgrading Mercedes’ voice assistant using the same AI language models that power systems like ChatGPT are a logical progression. The update should enable drivers to interact with the MBUX voice assistant using a more natural dialogue format, eliminating the need to remember specific phrases to activate certain functions3.
However, some critics argue that the integration might be more about jumping on the AI hype train than providing real value to drivers.
