OpenAI Disables ChatGPT Bing Web Browser Plugin

OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence research organization, has temporarily shut down the “Browse with Bing” web browser plugin for ChatGPT-4, their popular AI language model. The decision was made following concerns about the plugin displaying content inappropriately. The plugin, which allowed ChatGPT users to search the web using Bing, was disabled on July 3, surprising users over the July 4 holiday weekend. OpenAI plans to improve the feature and reintroduce it in the future, acknowledging the power of combining chatbots and internet search to obtain well-sourced information.

The disabling of the Bing web browser plugin was announced through a Help Center article by OpenAI. The organization thanked ChatGPT Plus subscribers for their valuable feedback during the beta testing phase. Some users expressed frustration on Twitter regarding the sudden disappearance of the feature. OpenAI’s decision to disable the plugin aligns with its commitment to providing a safe and reliable user experience. While the future of the ChatGPT web browser plugin remains uncertain, as it is an experimental model hosted by OpenAI, the organization aims to enable existing plugins and integrate them into other applications gradually.

OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft extends beyond Bing. While both companies collaborate and compete in AI, tensions have arisen due to their complex relationship. They license each other’s technologies but also develop competing products. Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, acknowledged the competition but emphasized the strategic partnership between the two organizations[2]. There needs to be more transparent and precise information about Microsoft’s attempt to acquire OpenAI.

In a recent update, OpenAI introduced the Browsing feature for subscribers of ChatGPT Plus on the ChatGPT mobile app. This feature allowed users to search the web via Bing, providing access to more up-to-date information beyond ChatGPT’s original training data. However, this move received mixed reactions, with some perceiving it as restrictive, considering Bing’s past controversies and limitations. OpenAI also implemented an enhancement where tapping on a search result directly takes users to the relevant point in the conversation, improving the browsing experience.
