Hello community! Today’s guest is Martijn Smit – Founder and creator of AI Spend.

AI Spend is a tool that helps you track and manage your OpenAI API costs. It provides a dashboard and notifications that passively monitor your usage and costs, and it also offers analytics and charts that can help you optimize your OpenAI usage and avoid billing surprises.

AI Spend is especially useful for businesses that are using OpenAI to build and deploy AI models. These businesses often have complex and dynamic AI workloads, which can make it difficult to track and manage their OpenAI costs. AI Spend can help these businesses to:

  • Understand their OpenAI usage: AI Spend provides detailed information about your OpenAI usage, including the types of models you are using, the amount of data you are processing, and the cost of your usage.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities: AI Spend can help you to identify areas where you can reduce your OpenAI costs. For example, it can help you to identify underutilized models, optimize your model configuration, and choose the most cost-effective pricing plan.
  • Avoid billing surprises: AI Spend provides notifications that warn you when your OpenAI usage is approaching your budget limits. This can help you to avoid overspending on OpenAI.

Overall, AI Spend is a valuable tool for businesses that are using OpenAI to build and deploy AI models. It can help them to understand their OpenAI usage, identify cost-saving opportunities, and avoid billing surprises.

Chris: Hello, can you tell us more about your background and what inspired you to start AI Spend?

Martijn: Hi, with a background in AI development, and a passion for statistics, measuring, and optimizing usage, I was inspired to start AI Spend. Before AI Spend, I had a few other apps that were using OpenAI for several purposes, and wanted to measure the financial impact of certain application design choices. I also didn’t want to constantly have a tab open to OpenAI’s usage page. And most importantly, I wanted to get notifications about my spending passively, as not to forget to look.

So, I built AI Spend for myself at first, but then I recognized the need for other developers to track their spend as well – after hearing some horror stories about apps getting abused for days on end, and companies ending up with a huge bill.

Chris: How does AI Spend connect to OpenAI accounts and retrieve usage data?

Martijn: AI Spend connects to OpenAI accounts through the OpenAI API tokens. By utilizing a few APIs, it retrieves usage data and consolidate it within the platform.

Chris: What are some of the most popular features of AI Spend? What new features are you planning to add to AI Spend in the future?

Martijn: By far, the cost usage email that gets sent every day. It’s a passive way of knowing what your OpenAI costs is up to, compared to the day before. So, if there’s a spike in cost, you’ll see that instantly, just by opening your inbox.

On second place, is the ability to combine multiple OpenAI accounts into a single cost view. In the OpenAI platform, you need to switch between accounts to see which the usage of each account. Within AI Spends’ dashboard, you can see that in one view.

In the future, I plan on enhancing AI Spend with per-hour visibility, incorporating additional AI providers such as Azure and Claude, and introducing predictive analytics capabilities.

Chris: How can users set cost alerts and create budgets in AI Spend?

Martijn: Cost alerts come automatically every day, every week, and every month. The daily alert tells you how much you’ve spent yesterday and compares it to the day before. The weekly alert tells you how much you’ve spent the entire last week, and compares it to the week before. And the monthly alert does the same for the entire month.

In the future, I’ll also be added the ability to set budgets, to facilitate alerts the instant AI Spend detects your accounts going over a certain amount.

Chris: What is your business model? What are your plans for monetizing AI Spend?

Martijn: It’s pretty straight-forward: it’s a [cheap] subscription. When you sign up, you’ll get a 7-day trial to try AI Spend and see how awesome the daily alerts are. After those 7 days, you can subscribe to keep the data going.

Chris: What are the biggest challenges to acquiring and retaining customers? How do you differentiate AI Spend from your competitors?

Martijn: The biggest challenge with acquiring customers is convincing someone they need to monitor their usage. Unfortunately, a company only realises the need for monitoring like this when it’s too late – they’ve gotten a massive bill. Financial usage monitoring isn’t something that’s top of mind for most people, especially solopreneurs. But, when it does happen; it hurts. The messaging around AI Spend it to prevent that pain.
Once a customer subscribes, they’re convinced of the value. In the last 6 months, I’ve only had a 5% churn rate.

Sidenote
: there aren’t really competitors for AI Spend, except for a few big companies like Datadog that have it as a part of their suite. I’ve not found competitors that solely do this. I think this is because that this kind of preventative tool isn’t top of mind (yet).

Chris: What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned since starting AI Spend?

Martijn: Since starting AI Spend, one of the most significant lessons learned is the importance of consistently listening to user feedback and fostering a long-term relationship with my customers. A financial monitoring product needs to earn the trust of its users.

Chris: Thanks for being with me, any last words? Where can our readers follow you?

Martijn: Thanks for your time and consideration. It’s been a pleasure discussing AI Spend and my vision for it. You can find me on Twitter daily, and you can also try AI Spend for free at aispend.io.
